InstansiThis experiment aimed to investigate the performance of microalgae to absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) in the raceway ponds made from stainless steel-304. The experiment was executed at Institute for Environmental Engineering Laboratory, Puspiptek, Serpong. The effective volume of the ponds were 1000 litre. The microalgae was cultured in fresh water. CO2 fed into the pond was prepared by mixing the CO2 from commercial tank and ambient air. The mixed gas then was stored in a gas holder made from plastic bag and has volume of about 4 m3. Two mixing methods in each pond was applied, namely by using paddle and pump. The paddle has diameter of 60 cm consisted of 6 blades and rotated 16 rpm. The rotation of paddle resulted the water flowing of 30 cm/ second. Pump used for mixing has capacity of 50 litre/minute. Pond equipped with paddle (pond-1) was enriched initially with microalgae (Chlorella, sp.) amounting of 0.00031x109 cell/mL. While pond equipped with pump (pond-2) was cultivated with Chlorella, sp. amounting of 0.00036x109 cell/mL. Flowrate of CO2 into the pond were 1,208.64 L/day and 1,271.52 L/day for pond-1 and pond-2 respectively. CO2 fed into the pond were gradually increased depend on the absorption performance. Research result was identified that average CO2 absorption were 125.36 g/d and 122.39 g/d for pond-1 and pond-2 respectively.
